Proximity Marketing with the Bluegiga Access
Server - FAQs Q: Which Products are most suitable for the Proximity
marketing application? A: The Obex-Sender application can manage up to 6
simultaneous connections to cell-phones on each of the integrated radios in the
Access Server. Thus, a 3-Radio Access server (2293) can maintain 18
simultaneous connections, and is the most suitable.
Q: Is the 'Obex
Sender' software for 'Proximity Marketing' included with all Access Servers?
A: Yes
Q: How do I use and configure the Obex-Sender? A: The
built in software only needs to be configured and enabled to start it working,
which can be done from the http (www) interface. A local Ethernet connection to
a PC running a web browser is sufficient. See the Obex Sender User guide for
details of how the user interface appears.
Q: Can Obex-sender get the
phone number of a users handset? A: No. it is not possible to obtain the
cell-phone number from a handset using the obex sender. The obex-sender obtains
Bluetooth MAC addresses, which are unique to each Bluetooth device. Obex-sender
database stores and uses the MAC addresses as it's reference to each remote
device.
Q: Does the Obex-sender provide statistical information about
users? A: Yes, there is a configurable level of logging to a log-file. This
file is also used to configure the re-try rate / timing for previously known
users. The information is based around MAC addresses as above.
Q: What
range can I expect to communicate to a phone handset? A: Most Handsets are
Class 2 Bluetooth devices, so have a typical 10 to 30 meter range in perfect
conditions. Although the Access Server is a class one device, Bluetooth is a
two-way prototcol, so the weakest link will define the range. Additionally, the
type, and site of Antenna's has an important effect, so it is not possible to
quote a minimum range without specifics being taken into account. If range is
an important factor for an application, then testing in the actual environment
is the only way to accurately determine range.
Q: Can I Change/Modify
the way the Obex Sender Works? A: You can configure many aspects of
Obexsender with the www, BSM or other configuration methods, to suit
requirements - see the Obex-Sender User manual for a full description of
user-configurable parameters. It is not possible to change the way in which
obex-sender itself works, or to disassemble the code or otherwise change it
under the license agreement.
Q: What Do I need to know in order to use
the system / Obex-Sender: A: In the simplest deployment, a user needs to be
able to connect to the Access Server via an Ethernet network to a computer
& use the web interface to configure the Obex-Sender application. An
understanding of basic radio technologies, wireless and wired networks and
capabilities to interface with other systems is required. More advanced
solutions, will require additional network and system understanding to
development and install solutions. For more complex requirements, users
development resources may also be required.
Q: What Else does the
Access Server require in order to broadcast messages to mobile phones? A:
Once configured, the Access Server can be completely standalone, needing only a
PSU to work. No PC is required for this. It may be connected to a network for
more real-time information and management, but this is not necessary to
broadcast Bluetooth Messages.
Q: Will Bluegiga be in future providing
complete marketing systems with advanced features and web-interfaces? A:
The BSM provides a remote management interface solution, but Bluegiga's role in
Proximity Marketing systems is to be a platform supplier on which users can
develop their solutions as required. See the
BSM brochure .
Q: What does the
BSM do? A: The BSM provides a mother of communicating with Access Servers
that are remotely located.
Q: Why is BSM necessary? A: Although it
is possible to connect remote Access Servers (via networking such as Ethernet
or GSM/GPRS) to the internet, the IP communications still require a solution to
make the devices & software communicate correctly. The BSM solves this
problem, and also allows for updating multiple devices simultaneously, and
storage of instructions to update devices temporarily off-line.
Q: How
do I get the BSM A: The BSM requires a host server computer with a fixed
internet address, which acts as a 'host' of the service. The Server can be
hosted by end customers, or rented as a service from Bluegiga. A smaller piece
of software has to be installed on each server to make it correctly communicate
with the host.
Q: How is the BSM controlled? A: When the system and
software is installed, as above, the user needs only to log onto the BSM server
host, using a web-browser on any computer connected to the internet. |
